Home Economics Pizza Oven Competition 2022!
Our Transition Year competition was such a success last year we are delighted to be running it again in 2022
A pizza project is a fun way to end the school year.
We are Pizza da Piero, a small business, baking fresh artisan pizza bases for the Irish retail market, operating from Dublin since 2007. Our sourdough pizza bases are made daily by hand, using the highest quality natural ingredients by my husband Piero, an artisan bread baker originally from Treviso in Italy.
As a secondary school teacher myself, I am passionate about healthy food, Irish produce and the importance of nutritional education. Our pizza bases won the highly acclaimed ‘Gold’ at the Irish Food Awards, Blas na hEireann 2020, and as a business, we’ve been awarded Regional Winner at the National Enterprise Awards March 2021.
Proposal:
- We are proposing a competition project for Transition Year students in a school with social media online presence across Ireland for the final month of school this year.
- This is an in-school/online project for Transition Year students and the Home Economics Department, in which they create a range of healthy and delicious pizzas using our bases. (However this project could be for whatever year group you would see as suitable for such an activity)
To enter:
1 - Each school must put together at least 5 pizza recipes using our bases and fresh ingredients across a range of diets, including but not limited to
Mediterranean diet
vegetarian
vegan
lactose free
diabetic
high fibre
low cholesterol
low salt
high protein
low fat
2 - Analyse the nutritional content of each pizza
3 - Photograph/video making the pizzas/final recipes and post to the school’s social media platforms using the hashtags #pizzadapieroforschools AND #pizzadapiero
4 - Tag us in at least 2 out of our 4 social media platforms.
Instagram - pizza_da_Piero
Twitter - @pizza_da_Piero
Facebook - @pizzadapiero
TikToc - @pizzadapiero
5- Follow our social media channels
What you could win
First prize - We will choose one school as the over all winner to receive a table top electric stone-based pizza oven for their Home Economics Dept. (See photo below) We would also send a box of 12 packs of pizza bases and 1 branded wooden pizza board.
Runner Up - Two runner up schools will win a box of 12 pizza bases as a gift for the Home Economics Dept. hard working teachers, along with a branded wooden pizza board for their Home Ec room.
If this competition is something your school might be interested in, please get in touch by replying to this email before Friday April 8th
Please note - your school must have social media accounts to enter and be considered as a winner
Schools may choose to get involved by buying the bases themselves in store and carrying out the project as described.
Although we would love to send hundreds of pizza bases out to schools all over Ireland, unfortunately we wouldn’t be able to supply more than this, due to extremely high demand within existing stockists.
Proposed timeline:
All schools can reply to this email by April 8th and will be registered as participant in the competition
Students research special diets, nutritional information and decide on the pizza toppings that go with their chosen special diet
3. Students prepare, cook and eat their chosen pizza taking photographs over the following two weeks until May 6th
4. Over those two weeks, schools share projects on the school's social media platforms tagging our accounts #pizzadapieroforschools AND #pizzadapiero
5. Winner is chosen by May 9th
6. Pizza oven and boxes of bases for staff of winning school and two runner up schools are posted out the week of May 10th to arrive before the end of term
Additional information about our pizza bases - They come in two sizes, four mini 5" bases and two regular 11" bases, and we also sell tomato-based pizza sauce. Our pizza bases are now widely available nationwide from Dunnes Stores, Tesco and Supervalu, as well as many smaller independent stores. Recommended retail price for a pack of 2 regular or 4 mini pizza bases is €3.99.
In comparison with other 11” pizza bases on the market, our pizza base is low in calories (362.6 cals), carbs (61.9g), saturated fat (0.8g) and high in protein (13.9g), Therefore they are often promoted by bloggers and influencers as healthy and good for those on low calorie/high protein diets. We have been told they are easier to digest than other pizzas for people on medication that interferes with the gastrointestinal system. This is possibly because of the long proving process of the dough and the high water content.
The ingredients (wheat flour, soya flour, filtered water, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt) are simple and understandable and contain no preservatives, sugars or additives.
They are naturally vegan friendly, sugar free and dairy free which according to Bord Bia are growing trends in recent times.
Take a look at our story and our various pages to learn more about us and our business as well as for recipe ideas.
We hope you will enjoy taking part.
Many thanks,
Cliona & Piero
